Fred Perry’s 60

Fred Perry is celebrating 60 years as a sportswear brand this year but it was the brand’s collaboration with Amy Winehouse in 2010 that bought it to my attention.

Amy’s retro style was a perfect match for Perry’s iconic polo shirt, which was first introduced in 1952 and has been seen as the unofficial uniform of rockers, punks, skinheads, rude boys and mods.

It was Amy’s love of 1950s pin-ups that influenced her own collection for Fred Perry. Richard Martin, director of marketing for the brand, said:  “She took traditionally masculine pieces and feminised them with a capped sleeve or a semi-sheer fabric. She always wore them with the collar up, so we made them that way.”
